Superferry Arrives in Hawaii June 30th

Note: Hawaii’s Superferry system was closed down. See our guide to Hawaii’s inter-island travel for alternatives for getting from island to island.

The Alakai, Hawaii’s new superferry vessel, will arrive on Oahu for the first time  tomorrow.  In an e-mail from Hawaii Superferry, they say that the Alakai should be visible from Koko Head around 1:30pm and then slow make her way to her new home at Pier 19.  For details on how you can be one of the first to see the Alakai, click here

  1. I can’t wait for the ferry service to start. Being an avid motorcycle enthusiast, it would be fun to spend the weekend over the Big Island and just ride around.

In another note, this will obviously make another dent in the already-fierce airline competition. I wonder what Aloha, Hawaiian and Go! are going to do once the ferry starts service….

  2. That’s a cool idea about being able to bring your motorcycle over to another island. At first, you will only be able to get from Oahu to Maui or Kauai. I beleive the Big Island will be added in 2009.

You pose a great question about how the ferry many impact the interisland air travel. We’ll have to keep an eye on it.

  3. I wouldn’t mind going to Maui’s Haleakala on a bike. 😉

With the recent airfare wars between the three airlines, I think all of them are going to wait and see what kind of impact the ferry will bring. No one’s going to react within the first month. It’s going to be a game of “who blinks first” as I would think all of them are pretty exhausted from the price swings of late.

If you noticed, Aloha and Hawaiian have been playing the “monkey-see, monkey-do” game with Go! by doing price matches whenever Go! does a deep discount price change. It wouldn’t surprise me if Go! made the first move in this never-ending saga of interisland transportation.
