Big Island Lava Returns After A Brief Break

081108012

According to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory, lava stopped flowing to the ocean for a few days last week, but it has returned again.  Shane Turpin of Lava Ocean Adventures tells me that the lava flow volume into the ocean has been heavy since the return.  Shane provide the above photo that he captured from one of his boat tours.  Pretty amazing, isn’t it?

  1. Cool picture!

    Sheila,

    In regards to your comment on my blog.

    RE: Scrubbing Bubbles Action Scrubber

    The issues with the rust and stains we had in our tubs were caused by hard well water. The water was orange at times. I kid you not. Needless to say we couldn’t drink it or cook with it.

    I cleaned our fiberglass tub with the scrubber and it didn’t scratch it. I don’t have glass shower walls so I honestly can’t answer that question.

    But I’ll say this that the scrubber is a pad with cleaning solution on it, it’s not an abrasive pad that you may be thinking of… it’s not like a wire sos pad.

    You wet the scrubber pad and apply just a little bit of effort and soap scum comes off.

  2. Hey Sheila,
    I hiked out there Sunday night into Monday. The flow is very wide and inflating. The ocean entry was nearly 1/2 mile wide in the beginning. It starts at the old littoral cone and heads west past Robert McKnights old structure. His remaining beams were surrounded sometime Monday night. Also the platform that had his couch is now gone. It was always nice to sit on it and view the flows.The flow is very hot and not for the inexperienced. Also new tubes have formed and they are shallow which causes the flow field to be so hot. So if your reading this don’t go past the barriers. I’m still going through my photos. I’ll let you when I’m done. The far western edge of the flow is very near the park boundary.

  3. @ Laura – thanks for the info. I’ll test a corner and see.

    @ Bryan – I was wondering if this post might pop up on your alerts. 🙂 Wow – the flow width sounds incredible.

    @jim – liquid rock rocks! 🙂

  4. Hi Sheila,
    I just got back from two days and nights out at the flows. The large ocean entry didn’t last very long. It’s now back to the usual spot but, still good viewing. It will take me a week to go through my photos. Yep, the google alert got this post 🙂
