If it’s boo-chilly where you are, hopefully these bits of Hawaii travel news will warm you up.
- Hawaiian Airlines has yet another enticing airfare sale. For those of you who can fly from Seattle, I’m slightly jealous of you because you can fly round-trip to Honolulu for $278. See all the special fares and requirements here. Don’t forget that Hawaiian also has a $100 eCertificate for HawaiianMiles Members.
- Northwest Airlines has a good airfare sale to Hawaii that’s worth a peek, but the deals are only for travel from the West Coast. The lowest fare on offer is Portland to Oahu for $152 round-trip. (Hey, Northwest, why the East Coast snub? I can forgive Hawaiian Airlines because they only fly on the West Coast, but you fly all over the US.)
- In 2009, Hawaii will celebrate its 50th anniversary as a state. In celebration of this milestone, Aqua Resorts is offering a special promotion called, “Nifty to be 50.” With the special offer you pay only $50 for the first night’s stay. Additional nights start at $119 for a stay it the boutique collection and $89 for their Aqua lite properties. You must stay three nights minimum. There’s a couple more enticements, too. You can find all the details on their Web site.
- Two upscale Kaanapali Starwood resorts are on sale. You can stay at the Westin Maui Resort & Spa for $220 per night. The Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa is also on sale for $199 per night. For both of these deals, if you go in January, the cost is an additional $20 per night, which is not bad for high season. Between the two, I prefer the location (by black rock) of the Sheraton.
- The Outrigger Reef is celebrating the near completion (January 2009) of their $110million renovation with a special deal called the Outrigger Reef Third Night Free & Breakfast Special. It includes daily breakfast for two and accommodations in an oceanfront guestroom or a one-bedroom suite. Guests must book a minimum of three nights to receive a third night free. I took a look around the common areas of this resort when I was on Oahu in October and I thought it looked quite nice. It’s one of the few resorts that’s actually on the beach at Waikiki. I definitely added it to my mental list of places I’d like to plan a stay for the future.

That’s it!
I’m tired of Northwest’s snubs! I’m going to create an airline called “Southeast Airlines” and we will fly direct from RDU to HNL with routing through Mexico, so we avoid even flying over the north west.
That’ll teach ’em! 🙂

The Westin or the Sheraton in Ka’anapali, that’s a pretty tough choice. We’ve been loyal to the Sheraton for all these years, but we did consider the Westin as an option for our upcoming trip.
I tend to agree on your choice about the location, though. Black Rock is such a neat sight to see, and having only one resort next to you instead of one on each side like the Westin has makes for a slightly quieter stay and a lot less foot traffic nearby.
As for the airline idea, I wonder if there are as many people in Honolulu that are as bummed that there are no direct flights from HNL to RDU. 🙂
DH and I stayed at Outrigger Reef for 10 days this August : we absolutely LOVED it !!
The rooms are spacious – with Hawaiian flavor !
We liked the Shore Bird restaurant with its “grill your own meat or fish” : very fun !!
and the entertainment they offer on Fridays !!!
They offer a rich “cultural” program – such as FREE lei making, hula lessons and hukulele classes .
We two partecipate in the Vows Renewal on the Beach
( at 7.45 in the morning ,when sun come “out” down Diamond Head and the sand is so soft)
and it was the highlight of our vacation.

@ Kris – you make a great point about the Sheraton only having one resort beside of it instead of being sandwiched between two. Oh, and I don’t think there’s many if any who are upset that there’s no direct flights from HNL to RDU. Hehe! 🙂
