I hope your weekend is off to a good start. Here’s some interesting Hawaii tidbits for you:
- Hawaii Vacation Gifts tells her first hand experience as a neighbor of Madame Pele and the active volcano on the Big Island. I can’t imagine how exciting it must be to see the lava flow glow from you house.

Mahalo for the mention! It’s been a week now since that post and every night we look for the “flow glow”. Sometimes it’s bigger and sometimes it’s smaller, but is a constant reminder of the active island we live on and the young energy that exudes from the Big Island.

Just happened to catch this thread.
The flow heading towards Pahoa died out (for now). The channel is over flowing close to it’s source (fissure D) right now and one of the overflows has been moving north east. It’s nearing the 1977 cone which is also known as Pu`u Kia`i (Guardian Hill). ck out this link for more info. http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/gallery/kilauea/erz/middleerz.html
If you look at a Topo map of the area you will see that the flow will make a downhill turn very soon if it continues. That would put the flow in an area of lava flows from 91-92 and at the end of hwy 130. Not the paved section but, further in on the bulldozed sections. Of course this all depends on when it decides to make the turn. Just follow the 1977 flows on any map to see the possibilities. What’s left of Royal Gardens could go to. The nights with brighter glows are from the channel overflowing. Hopefully our over zealous govt. officials don’t block access to this event when it happens 🙂

HVG – That is so cool! Have you tried capturing the glow in a photo or is it too dark and faint to capture?

Hi Sheila,
My husband said it would take a “film” camera (not digital), and a long exposure. I don’t think we will be doing it as it will have the window glass or screen in front of the camera. I will let you know if I come across someone else’s photo of the glow from the flow!
