– A brand new Cirque du Soleil is planned to debut in December. The show’s name is Auana by Cirque du Soleil and it will be based at the newly rebranded and refurbished Outrigger Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel.

– Hawaiian Airlines announced a new sweepstakes to win 500,000 HawaiianMiles that you can use for flights to and from Hawaii. This sweepstakes’ theme, Navigate Your Own Adventure, celebrates the new Disney Moana 2 movie that comes out November 27th. The fine print of this sweepstakes says, “Open to legal residents of the 50 U.S./D.C., AU (excluding SA), KR, JP, and NZ (“Eligibility Areas”) who are at least 18 years old or age of majority as of date of entry.” From this link, you can enter this sweepstakes and from this link, you can read the official rules.

– Hawaii News Now has an interesting segment about the popular manta ray experiences on Hawaii’s Big Island.

– We’ve been keeping an eye on the most recent hotel worker strike. It’s something to be aware of if you have reservations at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort. We had hoped that the strike would be resolved quickly, but it’s still ongoing more than a month later. USA Today published an article on the frustrations of both workers and hotel guests. Per UniteHere’s press release, you can use this link to determine which hotels are on strike. Note that Sheraton Kauai and Sheraton Maui are “at risk” for a strike, though there is not an active strike at the moment.

The post Everything you need to know for a November 2024 Hawaii vacation: weather, festivals and more! appeared first on Go Visit Hawaii.

]]>

Are you headed to one of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands this November? If so, here, you’ll find just about every detail you need to know to make it a fantastic vacation.

What’s Hawaii’s weather like in November?

The weather is always nice and summery in Hawaii without the big temperature swings that most of North America and Europe experiences on a seasonal basis. You can expect the average daytime high temperatures to be roughly 84°F (28.9°C) with nighttime temps only dipping to about 70°F (21.1°C).

While the amount of rain in November is above average compared to the drier summer months, I wouldn’t expect rain to have much of an impact on activities. Theres an interesting weather phenomena in that most of Hawaii’s rain falls overnight. The advantage you’ll gain from the typical uptick in rain is that the waterfalls should be flowing nicely and you might even catch a rainbow.

Ocean temperatures are above average in November. You can expect temperatures at or just under 80°F.

What to pack for a Hawaii vacation in November?

As previously mentioned, you’ll want to be prepared for warm, summer-like conditions. So, quick-drying shorts, tee shirts, etc. will work nicely for daytime wear. A breathable, waterproof jacket would be good to bring (save space by wearing it on the plane) just in case you get caught in a rain shower. See more Hawaii vacation packing tips.

Festivals & Special Events for a November Vacation

There are two national holidays in November — Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Hawaii offers a nice setting for both.

For Veterans Day, November 11th, look for special events across the islands. With several military bases on Oahu, most Veterans Day events happen on that island.

For the Thanksgiving holiday, November 28th, you can find many special menus at Hawaii restaurants. You’ll likely find traditional foods, such as roast turkey, but in some cases with a delicious Hawaii twist on some of the traditional Thanksgiving foods. As Waikiki is a popular destination for this holiday, we update this Waikiki Thanksgiving guide each year, which is a work in progress at the moment as most venues haven’t announced what they’re offering yet.

Beyond the two national holidays, there are some excellent festivals and special events that you might find interesting to include in your vacation itinerary. Here are the top events for this November.

Oahu

November 6th through 10th – Hawaii Food & Wine Festival

November 17 – 24 – Hawaii Woodshow

November 30 – Holiday Craft Fair

Hawaii, Big Island

November 1 to 10 – Kona Coffee Cultural Festival

November 16 – E Mau Ana Ka Hula – A Tribute to King Kalakaua

Kauai

November 2 – Eo E Emalani

November 24 – Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival – Kauai Style.

Maui

November 1 – 2 – Made in Maui County Festival

November 22 through December 24 – Hui Holidays

November 25 – 27 – Maui Invitational basketball tournament.

Natural occurrences in November in Hawaii

There are some wonderful natural occurrences that happen every November in Hawaii. First, the big winter swells start coming in. These are the world-famous 20-plus-foot-high waves that roll in onto the north-facing shores. These big waves attract professional surfing competitions, particularly on Oahu’s North Shore.

The big waves are incredible to see and leave it at just that — seeing them. Let the pros do the surfing on the big swells. See more about ocean safety in Hawaii.

Another neat natural occurrence is that more humpback whales start arriving into the sheltered waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands. Though the official whale watching season doesn’t start until mid-to-late December, if you keep your eyes peeled, you might see humpback whale activity.

By November, most of North America and Europe would have experienced the bleakness from the first frost. But, in Hawaii, flowers are in bloom and plants are green and vibrant and lovely.

Hawaii has some world class golf courses on all the islands. Even though I don’t golf, I still appreciate how beautiful and challenging these courses are.

On our very first trip to Maui in the early 2000s, Andy got to play at the Plantation Course in Kapalua. That’s the course where the PGA’s The Sentry tournament is held in January. He had such a big smile on his face after playing there. He described it as “playing in paradise”, though he said it was hard to focus on his swing and the ball when he was distracted by so much beauty.

Happy Aloha Friday!

Deanne took this photo on August 14, 2018 from one of Maui’s most famous restaurants, Mama’s Fish House. This popular restaurant sits ocean front on a small, but picturesque beach.

Due to it’s popularity, to dine at Mama’s Fish House you need to book a reservation well in advance. So, keep that in mind along with these other venues and attractions on Maui where you need to reserve in advance.

As I travel, I’m always fascinated to learn the local cultural norms. Of course, Hawaii has their own, too. One of them is that you should always remove your shoes before entering anyone’s home.

Often times you’ll see a sign by the front door that says, “Mahalo for removing your slippahs” which means to remove your shoes and leave them at the door. By the way, slippahs is local slang for thong sandals or flip flops, which are quite popular in Hawaii.

The practice of removing your shoes prevents you from tracking in sand and dirt that seems to get everywhere. It’s not only polite, it’s really for everyone’s benefit.

When we have stayed in VRBOs, most owners post that sign by the door. If you rent a vacation condo or home, you’ll likely see it, too.

For more cultural norms and points of etiquette, please see our article, Minding your manners in Hawaii.

The post What to expect for a October 2024 Hawaii vacation – weather and events appeared first on Go Visit Hawaii.

]]>

If you’re going to Hawaii this October, you’ll likely want to get an idea of what sort of weather you can expect, what special events are taking place and much more. We’ve organized all those important vacation topics into this one convenient spot.

Overall, October is an excellent month for a Hawaii vacation. In fact, I think we’ve probably visited Hawaii more times in October than any other month of the year.

What’s the weather like in Hawaii in October?

When I think of October in Hawaii, I think of warm sunshine in a vibrant tropical environment. At the beach resorts, for daytime high temperatures, you can expect mid-to-upper 80°F (roughly 30°C). Evening temperatures only tend to dip into the lower 70s.

From our experience, Hawaii tends to feel a little more humid in October. So, lightweight and quick-drying clothes will feel most comfortable.

October is not typically known as a rainy month in Hawaii. Rainfall levels are generally low — especially when compared to the wetter, winter months.

Ocean temperatures are at their warmest in September and October at approximately 81°F (27.2°C). While the water might feel chilly when you first step in, these ocean temperatures will feel pleasant after you acclimate.

As we mentioned in our September 2024 guide to Hawaii, this time of year is hurricane season. Though, hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii, if they pass near the Hawaiian Islands, they can cause high winds and heavy rain. That being said, we’ve visited Hawaii many times in October and not once did a hurricane affect our trip. If a hurricane is threatening Hawaii, many airlines and hotels tend to offer a bit more flexibility to cancel and/or reschedule vacation plans. So keep your eyes on the weather forecasts as your trip approaches.

For more weather details in October as well as the other months, see our Hawaii weather page.

What are the best vacation activities to include in an October visit to Hawaii?

With warm ocean conditions and sunny weather, you can have your pick of great adventures. Check out our tried-and-true Hawaii vacation itineraries for all the best activities and sightseeing to enjoy.

What special events and festivals are happening October 2024 in Hawaii?

If you’d like to learn about Hawaiian culture or perhaps observe a sporting event, check out the following list of special events on tap for October 2024.

Oahu

Maui

Big Island of Hawaii

Kauai

Molokai

Are there any natural occurrences that happen in October?

Flowers bloom all year round in Hawaii, so, you’ll get to see loads of gorgeous tropical plants and flowers. You’ll definitely have opportunities to snap photos of hibiscus, ginger and fragrant plumeria.

Though humpback whale watching season doesn’t “officially” start for another couple of months, quite often, the first whales are spotted in October. So, if you go out for a snorkel or sunset catamaran cruise, keep your eyes peeled for humpback whales.

As October is on the cusp of the winter big wave season, there can be days of higher surf. As such, some ocean tours might be cancelled if the ocean conditions are not safe. Regardless, it’s always a good idea to check ocean conditions before you swim, dive or snorkel.

The post Aloha Friday Photo: Hawaiian tradition of blowing the pu appeared first on Go Visit Hawaii.

]]>

Mahalo to Danielle Bauler for sharing this neat Aloha Friday Photo that she took from Maui. The young man in this photo is blowing a pu, which is also known as a conch shell. The blowing of the pu has a long tradition in Hawaiian culture. It signifies an arrival, start of an event or other significant happening.

In Danielle’s photo, the pu is most likely being blown to announce tiki torch lighting at sunset. Several Hawaii hotels have a torch lighting ceremony with a pu announcement. Also, it’s common to have a pu blowing at the start of luau.

On a visit to Molokai in 2013, we experienced an authentic Hawaiian protocol of arrival and requesting permission to approach that started with a pu announcement. Here’s what I wrote about that experience:

We followed our guide Gregory Kawaimaka Solatorio and his cousin Sean towards the valley. As we approached, Gregory blew the pu (conch shell) to announce our presence and approach. From a distance, we waited until we heard a response also by pu. This response meant that it was okay to approach so we walked closer.

Once the two parties could see and hear each other — approximately 50 yards apart, Keoho chanted in Hawaiian to tell the landowner who she was by ancestry and the purpose of our visit.

The landowner, Pilipo Solatorio, reverently and more affectionally called Anakala (uncle) Pilipo, chanted in Hawaiian. Though I understood very little of his chant, I did hear him saying, “E komo mai” which is the Hawaiian phrase for welcome. With this permission, we walked closer to Anakala Pilipo surrounded by his grandchildren practicing this traditional with him.

Happy Aloha Friday!

Hilton Waikoloa Village

– Rooms at the Hilton Waikoloa Village are on sale per Travelzoo. You can view the rates on a calendar at this link with the lowest rates starting at $227 per night including the resort charge! The sale run to March 2025, but you must lock in the sale price by reserving by September 18, 2024. This deal is fantastic — especially for a large resort. It’s located in the Waikoloa Resort within the Kohala Coast region of Hawaii’s Big Island. Per the most recent Hawaii hotel performance report, the average daily rate for a hotel on the Kohala Coast was $561.

– Maui Invitational Fan Sweepstakes will send two to this year’s event in November. Per the sweepstakes announcement, “One winner and a guest will receive two All-Tournament tickets to watch all 12 games, two Stadium Club hospitality passes, $150 tournament merchandise credit, a five-night stay at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, 160,000 HawaiianMiles from Hawaiian Airlines, an exclusive experience at Maui Brewing Co., one $500 gift card from Tommy Bahama, and two $100 gift cards from JLab.” The entry period runs through September 9, 2024. Per the Official Rules,”Open to legal residents of the fifty (50) United States or District of Columbia, who are at least 18 years of age and the age of majority in their state of residence as of 8/12/24, and have a valid U.S. driver’s license.” Some of the links from the announcement appear to be broken or expired, but this link to the sweepstakes seems to work.

– Festivities for the 25th Annual Queen Lili’oukalani Festival have been announced. We’ve updated our September 2024 Hawaii vacation guide to include this beautiful cultural festival, which includes a mass hula performance and thousands of floral blossoms dropped from a helicopter.

– I’ve created and updating a page with advice for women on what types of clothes to pack for a Hawaii vacation with current examples of resort wear.

Hawaii’s humpback whale season generally runs from late December through about early April, give or take a couple of weeks. They travel for thousands of miles to come to the protected waters to mate and give birth.

Seeing the whales leap out the ocean, breath and slap their fins and flukes is so very, very exciting. So, humpback whale season is special time to visit the Hawaiian Islands.

Though the “official” humpback whale season is still at least three months away, there are always some whales who decide to start their Hawaii vacations a little bit early. We’ve been tracking these first sightings for many years. Here’s our running list.

2006 – October 11
2007 – October 7
2008 – October 8
2009 – October 20
2010 – October 20
2011 — September 26
2012 — August 30
2013 — October 5
2014 — September 16
2015 — September 29
2016 – August 25
2017 — October 10
2018 — October 8
2019 — October 1
2020 — October 8
2021 — September 29
2022 – September 14
2023 — October 9

Update: 2024 sighting was October 6th.

So, now it’s time for a little bit of fun. Let’s hear your guess for the first arrival. Here’s how this contest will work.

  • Pick the earliest date you think the first whale sighting will be this coming season. Enter your prediction in the comment section, which is at the bottom of this post. (Sorry, but we can’t accept guesses emailed to us or comments on Facebook. If you are reading this article on email, go to this post page to enter your comment.)

    • Note: if you are a first-time commenter, your comment will first go into moderation. It may up to 12 hours for us to be alerted. Once we’re alerted to it, we will approve it, then it will display.
  • The closest prediction without going over will win bragging rights and a copy of Fascinating Facts About Hawaii by Jim Loomis.
  • We’ll use Hawaii newspapers and news stations as our sources to determine the first whale sighting of this season.
  • One entry per person will be accepted.
  • Anyone from around the world is eligible to enter. We have a two-time winner from Italy.
  • Entries will be accepted through September 6, 2024. In the event that the first whale sighting is before September 6, valid entries will be accepted through the day before the reported sighting.

Not only will you have bragging rights, should you win, we also have a small prize. This year’s prize is a book of Fascinating Facts About Hawaii by Jim Loomis. Here’s the image of the front cover.

Alright, it’s time now to enter your guess in the comment section below.

September is a wonderful time for a Hawaii vacation with great weather, lower crowds and an abundance of natural beauty.

After Labor Day and with kids back in school in North America, the crowds are much lower. When crowds are down, hotel or vacation rental costs are lower than average, too.

What weather conditions to expect in Hawaii for a September vacation?

At most beach resorts, the daytime temperatures average in the mid-to-upper 80°F (31°C). Nighttime feels warm, too, with lows only dipping into the 70s.

On average, September is one of the drier months to visit Hawaii. So, you should be able to enjoy plenty of sunshine.

Ocean temperatures are at their warmest in September and October at approximately 81°F (27.2°C). While the water might feel chilly when you first dip your toes in, these ocean temperatures will feel pleasant after you acclimate.

There is one, weather “hitch” worth mentioning for a September trip to Hawaii. It’s hurricane season for the Pacific Ocean. The good news is that Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii, though the wind and heavy rain can affect the islands. (See frequently asked questions about Hawaii hurricanes.)

Another point worth mentioning is that after the drier months of summer, the waterfalls might not be as spectacular as they are in wetter seasons. With the rain starting to pick up a little bit, most waterfalls should be flowing.

What are some vacation activities and adventures to include in a September visit to Hawaii?

With warmer ocean conditions and sunny weather, you can have your pick of great adventures. Check out our tried-and-true Hawaii vacation itineraries for all the best activities and sightseeing to enjoy.

What special events and festivals are going on in Hawaii for September 2024?

Several great cultural festivals take place in September. Here are some of the top events to plan into your September 2024 trip.

Oahu

Maui
    • Ku Mai Ka Hula – September 14 – Maui’s only adult hula competition
    • Richard Ho’opi’i Leo Ki’eki’e Falsetto Contest – September 21

Big Island of Hawaii

Kauai
    • Mokihana Festival is a weeklong Hawaiian culture festival held this year from September 22 through 28.

Are there any natural occurrences or blooms that happen in September?

Flowers bloom all year round in Hawaii. You’ll get to see lots of gorgeous tropical plants and flowers. One extra special bloom that you may have the opportunity to see in September are the beautiful Rainbow Shower Trees that bloom in summer and early fall. The photo at the top of this article shows a Rainbow Shower Tree in bloom.

More articles to help you make the most of your Hawaii vacation in September 2024 and beyond, too!

Mahalo to Barbara Nardelli from Roma (Rome), Italy for sharing this neat Aloha Friday Photo.

Though Barbara took this photo of Hanauma Bay in 2019, it appears that she’s applied a neat vintage filter that makes the photo look aged. This nostalgic aesthetic makes us think of the Elvis movies that were filmed in Hawaii, including Hanauma Bay.

Happy Aloha Friday!
