Seems like yesterday brought some extreme weather across the US. Hawaii was pounded with rain and there’s even a winter weather warning for Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Haleakala with 3 to 5 inches of heavy wet snow possible. We had thunderstorms and tornado warnings in North Carolina yesterday, while south Louisiana had a rare snow. Strange weather day, huh? How’s the weather in your neck of the woods?
While the weather outside might be frightful, I hope you’ll find these Hawaii deals and news bits to be delightful. 😉
- The Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort on the Big Island is celebrating the whale season in two ways. First, they’ll offer free lectures and “talk story” with Justin Viezbicke who is the Big Island programs coordinator for the Hawaiian Island Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary. These free talks will be held from 6:00pm to 7:30pm on December 16 and 30, January 13 and 27, and March 3 and 17. These talks are open and free to the public.
- For guests staying at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott for five consecutive nights or more from December 15, 2008 through April 15, 2009 will automatically receive one two-hour complimentary whale watching cruise voucher per room.
- On December 4th, I reported that lava was flowing towards Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. According to the Hawaii Volcano Observatory report on Wednesday, lava crept inside the park’s boundaries. I’m checking into potential viewing opportunities. Lava rocks!
- TripAdvisor reports that 81% of US survey respondents will go see family and friends for the holidays, while 13% plan a holiday escape. Guess where the top holiday dream escape destination is? That’s right, Hawaii!
- The situation on Maui vacation rentals has been a tad bit of a mess and heated subject over the last year or so. On Wednesday, the Maui County’s vacation rental permit rules were upheld in a court case versus the Maui Vacation Rental Association. (You can read more about this case result here.) So, what does this mean to you? If you are planning a stay in a vacation home or B&B, you should check to see if the owners have a permit for vacation rentals.

I was watching National Lampoons Vacation last night and couldn’t help laughing. Here is my favorite a quote…

Clark:
When I said where do you wanna go on vacation, where did you say? Rusty?
Rusty: Hawaii?
Clark: Shut up Rus, Audry?

Dave – Haha! I’m with Rusty. 🙂
Guess what we watched last night? National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Of course I especially enjoy the part where they play Bing Crosby’s Mele Kalikimaka. 🙂
This is too funny!! At the holiday party I went to last night, I was one of two who hadn’t seen National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (and was thoroughly teased) – it’s a small world 😉
Hi Ami – hehe – well now, you’re going to have to see it. 😉
Snow and lava flows. Awesome. Wish I was spending this xmas on the Big Island.
