When you are flying on an inter-island flight, try if you can to get a window seat, avoiding the views of the wing of course. There’s a good chance you’ll get a nice view and neat perspective of the islands from the air. I’ve always had better luck with the views when I’ve flown on the side of the plane with the A and B seats. Here are a few points to notice about the islands from your window seat:
- the rough volcanic shape of the islands.
- how undeveloped the mountainous areas are
- the difference in leeward and windward sides
- how pretty the beaches look even from the air
I took the photo above as we were taking a Hawaiian Air flight from Honolulu to Kona. Pretty cool, huh?

Let’s hope that Hawaiian Airlines doesn’t read this post and follow US Airways lead by charging extra for a “seat with a view.” 😉

Jim- yeah they’re starting to charge for “coach choice” seats that are window and aisle seats in the first several rows of coach.

If you’re going from HNL to Hilo, sit on the DEF side. You’ll get a great view of the coast line!
