Here’s what happened on for New Year’s Eve on December 31, 2013.
New Year’s Eve Fireworks on Maui
* There’ll be midnight fireworks in South Maui according to several sources. We need to be a little cryptic on the location until it’s public knowledge. If past history is an indicator for the future, the location will be near a place that starts with a Wai and ends with a lea. Got it? The reason that the location is not broadly advertised is that parking is very limited.
If you are not staying in that South Maui area and you would like to see the fireworks, we recommend you take one of the special New Year’s Eve firework cruises. At the time of publishing, the following businesses have availability:
- Pacific Whale Foundation is offering New Year’s Eve cocktail cruises that depart from both Ma’alaea and Lahaina harbors. Ma’alaea Harbor is further away from the West Maui resorts, however it is far easier to find parking in Ma’alaea. Pricing starts at $79.95 for adults, but you can save 10% if you book online. For more information, see this link.
- Alii Nui is offering a dinner buffet fireworks cruise with complimentary transportation to and from West and South Maui resorts. The price is $249 if booked online or $299 if not booked online. This cruise is open to adults only. For more information on the dinner menu, reservations and the location, see this link.
- Both Pride of Maui and Leilani are both sold out, however you can ask to go on their waiting lists.
* Unfortunately, the little East Maui town of Hana was unable to raise the funds needed for fireworks this year. (Hat tip to Rebecca Pang.)
New Year’s Eve Fireworks on Lana’i
A spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks show above Hulopoe Bay is planned. The adjacent Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay will host a Count Down to 2014 with The Brenna Whitaker Little Big Band. At the time of publishing we were able to find room availability at both Four Seasons Lanai resorts. (We welcomed in 2010 from Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay. The fireworks show was outstanding.)
Advice & Notes:
- Many resorts across Maui Nui will offer special New Year’s Eve dining and entertainment. Check directly with your resort’s concierge for recommendations. Another alternative for finding New Year’s Eve dining is via OpenTable. Additionally, we recommend you pick up a copy of the Maui News when you are on island for more options.
- We aim to keep this list of New Year’s Eve events updated as we are made aware of information. So, do check back for more details.
- While you’re in Maui start practicing the phrase Hau’oli Makahiki Hou, which is the way to say Happy New Year in Hawaii.
